Mount Meru is located in the heart of Arusha National Park, about 50 miles west of Mount Kilimanjaro. Rising to 4,565 meters, it is a striking volcanic mountain that offers one of the best trekking experiences in Tanzania. Many hikers choose Mount Meru as a warm up climb before Kilimanjaro because of its similar altitude gain and demanding trails. It is also a great option for those who prefer a quieter and more intimate mountain experience away from larger crowds.

Because the mountain is inside a national park, all treks are done with an armed ranger due to the presence of wildlife such as elephants, giraffes, and buffalo, especially on the lower slopes. The trail gradually climbs along the northern crater rim, offering beautiful views and a dramatic ridge walk. Hikers sleep in designated huts along the route, making the journey more comfortable and organized. Reaching the summit at sunrise is a truly special moment, with wide views of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance and the vast Mount Meru crater spread out below.
